Over twenty years ago, John Cage’s challenging words seem to have alluded to what is happening in the library sector in the U.K. On one hand, very refined constructive methods and avant-guard architectural designs are used to build new libraries re-elaborating typical schemes, while on the other the emphasis is laid on maximum diffusion of knowledge and development of every form of virtual access. Perhaps the construction of what Cage would have called «useless libraries where it is superfluous to go» is already underway in the U.K.
